An Interview with Singer/Songwriter Joe White

What first got you into music?
My auntie was in a band called Wednesday Child, and she played with now organiser of Metal's Village Green Festival 'Sean Mcloughlin' who donated his classical guitar to me and my brother and he also bought me a single of a band called Rocket From The Crypt called 'On A Rope' that kinda all kick started my love for music.

Who inspired you to make music?
Apart from those around me growing up, watching Micheal Jackson music video's and hearing the amazing recordings and big budget videos inspired me to wanna make music.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?
Funky i guess, and pop infused, i was always into heavier music growing up, but i always graved melodies, i am a big fan of all genres and music as a craft but yeah my music i make always tends to have melody and funk thrown in. I like playing with electronic sounds and synths so recently steered away from my guitar and got more into producing over the years.

What is your creative process like?
I always start on ideas by myself and i kinda like to experiment with sounds and build structure to an idea i have had. Then i work through just making weird arrangements to come up with something new and fresh.

Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Pharell Williams is the master collaborator and i have grown up always wanting to get in the studio with him, as for my project singer wise id like to get SG Lewis, Benny Sings, HONNE, FARR, Jarreau Vandal, Zak Abel or Issac Waddington on some tracks, i love the sounds and music they make.

If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?
Fleetwood Mac or TOTO not that id be suited just would love to tour and hang with them and watch side stage.

What is one message you would give to your fans?
Thank you, and please buy a tee shirt so i can eat dinner & pay my bills, but in all seriousness thanks for listening to my music and coming to shows, watching you all sing along and being together with me is the reason why i make music.

What is the most useless talent you have?
I can do a trick with a cup when i drink, i cant even explain it, come to a show and il perform it on stage.

Do you sing in the shower? What songs?
All the time, i sit down in the shower and listen to full albums haha....\

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
Who knows, i used to play football, maybe i should of gone with that, id be alot richer and have less of a beer belly HAHA.

Where have you performed? What are your favourite and least favourite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?
Radio One's big weekend with my band Youth Club was sick, and venue also KOKO London after we had been played on radio one was a memorable show. As for J Hustl3 i havn't done any live shows yet, but im announcing my first summer show really soon, it will be local and big, so please keep an eye out and come along. Plus Youth Club might be touring a bit soon, just been having some well deserved time off while band members had babies.

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
Good & bad, its constantly changing now, you have to move with the times and keep up with it all to survive. I hate & love it.

What is your favourite song to perform?
With my band Youth Club probably 'Filling it up to go' with J Hustl3 not played yet but im excited to perform 'Motivate Me ft. Orlean'.

Which famous musicians do you admire?
I follow Anderson Paak on instagram as i just love how is with people, his band, collaborating and creating content. I very much admire his work ethic.

What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?
Don't think i can say on here, but i dont get into too much trouble anymore, but lets just say don't get drunk at a karaoke bar and try and climb in a fish tank.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?
Always get your ideas out of you, good or bad, just create, your mind sometimes needs to just create to help get the good ideas out you have to make bad ones too.

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
The way streaming pays artists, its a bit unbalanced atm.

What’s next for you?
DEBUT live show with J Hustl3, working on my next EP 'Chapter Two' and DJing lots of big festivals over the summer all being announced soon. With the band, new music maybe, start touring a bit again maybe, we need to all meet for a beer and start planning basically. Just keep an eye on my socials, il be announcing all soon....
