What does your band name mean? It’s a nickname Matt
got after saying something silly while attempting to break through the waves in
Cornwall - He asked if another surfer’s board “was made of rooskin”. Then when
we came to starting the band we thought it’d be a great name!
How did you meet? Rob and Matt have
been in bands together since the end of secondary school, Lost in May, Chase
the Day and then briefly Silk… after a few years off we came back as The Roo!
What's your song writing
process? At the moment Rob
writes the core of the songs and then takes them to the band for all the
shimmery shiny hooks and sprinkles! After the EP when we have a good body of
work out we hope to take our time and write more as a group!
What does your typical day/week
look like? It changes a lot
depending on what we’re doing, sometimes we’re rehearsing for a show,
sometimes we’re recording new tracks or sometimes we’re just hanging out! We’ll
either be out in a summer’s afternoon or in the winter we’ll be hibernating and
working through every midnight.
Describe each member of the
band?
Matt on Buddy: Buddy
is um… some peaceful hippy come down from heaven!
Felix on Rob: Most
drama free - always chill, good vibes!
Rob on Pete: Energy
machine that keeps on giving and has infinite knowledge of shredding!
Pete on Matt: Every
indie boy's dream!
Buddy on Felix : A real talking who knows how to hit things real good and real in time, as well as having an ear for an epic tune!
Who would you most like to collaborate with and why? Pete wants Quincy
Jones or Mark Ronson! Felix wants Jack Stratton from Vulfpeck! Matt wants to
collaborate with Lana Del Rey! Rob wants to write with The Wombats!
Who are your influences? We have a lot of
influences across all of the members from jazz to pop and country to funk… at
the core are the moment though are probably Mac Demarco, Beach Boys, Genghar &
Crumb - we’ve also become infatuated with a band we saw in Brighton called Nature TV!
What's next for you? After the EP is out we have a single we’ve almost finished recording and a load more waiting in the wings! Hopefully if the global social climate allows it we’ll try and do a small tour as soon as possible!
